In modern-day Japan, a bloody war rages between the students of seven high schools and academies in the area around Tokyo. All of these youths have at their disposal immense power, conferred on them by sacred stones, the magatamas, which are the receptacles of the souls of Chinese warriors who fought for the unification of China. Their title: Ikkitousen, redoubtable warriors, each capable of defeating a thousand [ordinary] men unassisted. A passionate manga already adapted as anime to great success.
[Finally, something to make Enfer et Paradis (Tenjou Tenge) look serious - well, sort of. Japanese high school students are, for no particularly good reason I can see, the reincarnations of legendary warriors from the Three Kingdoms period in China. By the way, it's called "Sangoku" in Japanese, and in the French version of the manga, but should not be confused with Songoku from Dragon Ball. (Er, well, actually, I guess it wouldn't matter too much if it were confused...) Speaking of confusion, sometimes the (French) text refers to the Warring States period instead, which was more than 400 years earlier (around 500-220 B.C., rather than the 220-265 A.D. period of the Three Kingdoms).
[Perhaps the strongest, and certainly the goofiest of all the student-warriors is Hakufu Sonsaku, who, despite her rather pneumatic appearance, may be the reincarnation of the legendary Shou Haou. Unfortunately, the warrior's brain does not seem to have been resurrected along with his spirit, or perhaps finding itself reborn as such a spectacularly misproportioned girl has permanently addled it. Fortunately, her childhood friend Shuyu Kôkin, himself another one of the reincarnated warriors, is around to provide guidance to her (or something like that).
[The Génération Comics edition is no doubt as good as it needs to be, including the Hakufu foldout color miniposter.
[Difficulty: The main difficulty is conceptual - the whole thing doesn't seem to make much sense. Once you accept that, no problem.]

The story is too long to summarize. The life of Ikkyu, a monk in medieval Japan with a most peculiar destiny. (It should be said that being the emperor's bastard doesn't help.)
Commentaires : De très beaux dessins, une histoire qui mêle très bien poésie, humour et sentiments. J'adore. En plus, c'est un manga historique intelligent, très bien pour prêter à des gens réfractaires à ce genre de lecture. Les retouches du deuxième tome sont plus au point que dans le premier. En particulier, ils ont viré la police italique illisible en blanc sur fond noir. (ME)
Very beautiful artwork, a story which mixes well poetry, humor, and emotions. I love it. Moreover, it's an intelligent historical manga, a very good choice to give to those resistant to this sort of literature. The retouching in the second volume is better done than in the first. In particular, they have changed away from the illegible italic white on black font. (ME)

Commentaires : Je n'ai malheureusement découvert cette série qu'après que l'arrêt ait été décidé par Glénat. Moi qui d'habitude ne suis pas une fana de séries de sport, j'ai tout acheté et dévoré en un week-end ^^ Déjà, c'est très joli question graphisme (Asada est un ancien assistant de Kamijo, ça se voit), et puis les matches ne traînent pas en longueur et l'histoire se focalise en fait surtout sur les divers problèmes que traversent les membres de l'équipe (et ils en ont beaucoup, en bons ados rebelles). I did not unfortunately discover this series until after Glénat had decided to stop it. I, who ordinarily am no fan of sports series, bought them all and devoured them in a weekend ^^ First off, it's really nice from the standpoint of the artwork (Asada is a former assistant of Kamijo, and it shows), and then the matches don't drag on too long and the story focuses especially on the various problems the team members encounter (and they have a lot of them, as proper rebellious adolescents). Moi aussi j'ai découvert cet série bien après son arrêt mais ce qui ma donné en vie de la faire, c la reprise de sa parution par les édition Tonkam. J'espère que la qualité ne changera pas trop. Mais ou sinon c'est un très bon manga, bien joli et d'un style agréable... @Lire (Pikouze) ^_^
I also discovered this series well after it was stopped, but what gave me the incentive to do so was the fact that Tonkam picked it up again. I hope the quality will not change too much. In any case, it's a very good manga, quite attractive and done in a nice style... Recommended (Pikouze) ^_^
Voilà la seule série qui m'a émue (et il en faut j'suis une dure !) le graphisme est superbe, Asada fait sortir les personnages des pages, il a une fluidité tout à fait impressionnate. En plus à côté de ça, tous ces gamins idiots sont terriblement attachants, l'histoire est bien construite, intelligente, légère et réfléchie malgrè tout ! It's springtime, during the vacation that preceeds entry into high school. [Uh, for American censors, make that "junior college."] A boy [er, "young man"], Ki-Itchi Aiura decides to return to Yatake, the village of his ancestors, to retrieve a strange sword - "karasumaru," which belonged to his great-grandfather. [You don't need to know much about Freud to figure that one out, do you?] En route, the young man gets lost in the mountains. Fortunately[?] for him, Sumiko, a girl [er, "young woman"] passing by, takes him to Kebigasawa, a village close to Yatake. Ki-Ichi quickly notices that the comportment of the women there is really strange.
[More creepy than erotic, in my opinion. Even though the manga is apparently just a few years old, Kashiwagi's style is quite retro - like something out of the '70's. Fortunately, she tells us when the women are supposed to be attractive, since I can't really tell from the artwork.
[Interesting, though I admit I haven't quite warmed up to it yet. And no, this isn't a request for the women of Kebigasawa to help with that. I will say, though, that I'm through volume 2 now and the odd sexual rituals are piling up to a degree that would embarrass even Margaret Mead.

Continually bouncing back and forth between modern and feudal Japan, the adventure can then start!
Commentaires : Un bon manga sur fond de légendes anciennes chinoises et japonaises. Le style graphique est presque le même que pour Ranma 1/2 (même auteur) mais c'est tous, car les dessins sont plus soignés que chez Ranma 1/2. Le scénario est bien trouver et les situations inattendues et rocambolesques font d'Inu-Yasha un bon manga... à suivre... @Lire (Pikouze)
A good manga founded on ancient Chinese and Japanese legends. The graphic style is pretty much the same as for Ranma 1/2 (same author), but that is all, since the drawings are done with more care than in Ranma 1/2. The plot is well done, and the unexpected and Rocambole-like situations make of Inu-Yasha a good manga... to be continued... Recommended (Pikouze)
[Rocambole is the hero of a series of 19th-century "romans- feuilletons" by Victor Alexis Ponson du Terrail. These were serialized in newspapers, and invariably featured dramatic, often literally cliff-hanging predicaments at the end of each episode, from which the hero would fantastically escape at the beginning of the next.]

Il est plus realiste que Video Girl Ai, et le lecteur peut facilement s'identifier aux personnages. Les dessins sont plus fins et tres realistes. Franchement, c'est un manga à ne pas rater. It's more realistic than Video Girl Ai, and the reader can easily identify with the characters. The artwork is more detailed and very realistic. Frankly, it's a manga which is not to be missed. It is interesting, though, how divergent opinions on I"s tend to be, as the commentaries above indicate. As for my opinion, well, as I have indicated elsewhere, I prefer my Katsura short and silly. I"s can get fairly silly at times, but it's not short. The covers are very cute, though.]
