Kenji is a peaceful merchant who has taken over and transformed the family store [from a liquor store to a "convini" (convenience store)]. His only problem is his sister's baby daughter, which the former entrusted to [or rather "dumped on"] him before leaving. But then one day, the police come to interrogate him over the disappearance of the family of one of his clients. The only clue is a mysterious symbol drawn next to a door. Kenji doesn't feel particularly concerned about this until the day when Donkey, one of his childhood friends, asks him if he remembers that very same symbol. Kenji then probes the life of Donkey, his own past and that of the group of friends he was part of during his youth. He soon discovers the existence of a clandestine organization which is directed by the mysterious "Friend" and which uses this symbol linked to Kenji's past as a rallying sign. In Japanese [unflipped] reading order.
[Another masterwork (along with Monster) from Urasawa. This one was inspired in part by the story of the Aum Shinrikyo cult and its subway gas attack. Again, the art may seem a bit cartoony, at least from the standpoint of character design, but functions quite effectively in the story. And the story itself is very well put together, maintaining a higher level of mystery and tension than even Monster. (Though I somehow prefer the sensibilité of Monster.) The point of view flips back and forth between the present (around 1997) and the past (around 1969 for the most part), but Urasawa never confuses, only misleads.
[The Génération Comics edition is good, unflipped as noted above. The only problem is they're very bad about keeping things in print! It took me forever to snag a copy of volume 1, and some of the other volumes are getting hard to find too.
[Difficulty: moderate - the text is written in a straightforward fashion, more so than in some of the slangy mangas. I think it's slightly more difficult than Monster, due to the Japanese references, but still shouldn't offer any great challenge if you can read normal French. That said, though, unlike some of the lighter mangas, you'll be missing most of the point of this one if your reading comprehension isn't so good - what seems like a casual remark here or there may in fact prove key to the later development of the story.]

Yakumo, on the way to his job, runs across a girl dressed as a vagabond. This proves a fortunate accident, as Pai is looking for Yakumo. It seems that Yakumo's father, on an expedition to Tibet, promised Pai that his son would help her become human. Pai in fact possesses some rather strange powers, and goes on to enmesh Yakumo into a series of adventures, where even death may no longer be an obstacle.
Commentaires : Je n'ai pas la VF, mais elle avait l'air correcte. En tout cas, il s'agit la d'un excellent manga rempli de très, très bonnes idées. Un tantinet gore, mais pas trop. Le graphique est assez japonais, et souvent sommaire, mais c'est surtout le scénario qui compte. (ME)
I don't have the French version, but it has the right look to it. In any case, this is an excellent manga full of very, very good ideas. A bit gory, but not too much so. The artwork is rather "Japanese," and often a bit sketchy, but it's above all the story which counts. (ME)
Résumé des 2 premiers volumes : 1983, M. Fujii, professeur de culture folklorique disparaît au cours d'une enquête qu'il mène dans les terres reculées du Tibet. 1987, Yakumo, qui n'a aucune nouvelle de son père, vit seul. Il est lycéen. Un jour, il fait la rencontre fracassante d'une jeune fille en possession d'une lettre et des cendres du professeur Fujii. La lettre lui apprend que cette fille est une survivante Sanjiyan Unkara, peuple qui possédait une technique magique pour donner l'immortalité, et qu'elle cherche le moyen de se transformer en être humain normal. Yakumo, qui ne comprend rien à cette lettre, se moque d'elle. Mais il est attaqué par Takuhi, le monstre domestique de la jeune fille qui lui sauve la vie grâce à la magie de l'immortalité. C'est alors que Yakumo comprend le sens de la lettre de son père. Il décide de voyager avec la jeune fille prénommée Pai, qui a un 3ème oeil sur le front et de rechercher ensemble le moyen de la transformer en humaine. Ils arrivent à Hongkong et rencontrent Mlle Lee Lin-Lin qui travaille dans l'édition de magazines spécialisés dans les domaines occultes. Elle leur apprend que pour transformer un Sanjiyan en être humain, il est indispensable de retrouver la "Statue des Hommes". Yakumo, Pai et Mlle Lin-Lin vont mettre la main dessus au cours d'une enquête sur une affaire mystérieuse que leur a demandé d'effectuer la maison Hoang. Mais une fois l'affaire résolue, la statue disparaît. Sans cet indice capital, Yakumo et Pai repartent au Japon.
Summary of the first two volumes: 1983: Dr. Fujii, a professor of folklore, disappears in the course of an inquiry which takes him into the hidden regions of Tibet. 1987: Yakumo, who has had no news from his father, lives alone. He is a high school student. One day, he quite literally runs into a girl who is in possession of a letter and the ashes of Professor Fujii. The letter informs him that this girl is a surviving Sanjiyan Unkara, one of a people who possess a magical technique for bestowing immortality, and that she is in search of the means to transform herself into a normal human. Yakumo, who understands nothing of this letter, makes fun of it. But he is attacked by Takuhi, the pet monster of the girl who saves his life thanks to the magic of immortality. It is thus that Yakumo understands the import of his father's letter. He decides to travel with the aforementioned girl Pai, who has a third eye on her forehead, and to seek together with her the means to transform her into a human. They arrive in Hong Kong and meet Miss Lee Lin-Lin, who works as an editor of magazines specializing in the occult domains. She tells them that in order to transform a Sanjiyan into a human being, it is essential find the "Statue of Humanity." Yakumo, Pai, and Miss Lin-Lin end up assisting in the inquiry into a mysterious affair, at the request of the House of Hoang. But once the affair is resolved, the statue disappears. Deprived of this primary article, Yakuma and Pai return to Japan.
Yakumo prend conscience qu'il a commencé à aimer Pai depuis le début de leur voyage, mais il ne peut pas se résoudre à abandonner sa petite vie paisible au Japon. Au lycée, ses amis sont engagés dans un combat contre des monstres qui tentent de tuer le Sanjiyan. Depuis qu'il est devenu immortel, Yakumo devient la cible de ces monstres et décide de quitter le lycée jusqu'à ce qu'il redevienne un être humain normal. C'est à cette période qu'il reçoit une lettre de Mlle Lin-Lin lui disant qu'elle a retrouvé la "Statue des Hommes" et il repart avec Pai à Hongkong. Là, ils se retrouvent plongés de nouveau dans une affaire mystérieuse. Pai découvre avec effarement que des monstres essayent de ressusciter le roi des ténèbres Kigan-Ô. Kigan-Ô était un rebelle de la race Sanjiyan et le responsable de son génocide. Pour empêcher cette résurrection du roi qui veut dominer tous les êtres vivants de la planète, Pai affronte Benarès, son "wu" (serviteur immortel). Elle ne reviendra pas. Yakumo grows aware that he is falling in love with Pai from the beginning of their voyage, but he cannot bear to give up his peaceful day-to-day life in Japan. In school, his friends are enmeshed in combat with monsters who are attempting to kill the Sanjiyan. Since he has become immortal, Yakumo becomes the target of these monsters, and so decides to leave school until he can again be an normal human being. It's at this point that he receives a letter from Miss Lin-Lin telling him that she has found the "Statue of Humanity," and so he sets out again with Pai to Hong Kong. There, they find themselves plunged anew into a mysterious affair. Pai discovers the frightening news that the monsters are attempting to revive the king of darkness, Kigan-O. Kigan-O was a rebel against the Sanjiyan race and was responsible for its genocide. To prevent this resurrection of a king who wants to rule all the living beings on the planet, Pai confronts Benares, his "wu" (immortal servant). She does not return. Yakumo then departs on a voyage to try to find trace of her, and dreams of the day where he will find her again, and when, together, they will again be human beings. Then, 4 years pass... (FJ)

[Note: the French edition is done directly from the Japanese version and thus includes the stories previously skipped by Dark Horse, as well as all the little odds and ends (like the mini-goddess cartoons). The quality of reproduction in the earlier volumes was at times a bit worse than the Dark Horse version, though. To some extent, this is a matter of taste - Studio Proteus/Dark Horse (like most American editions) usually goes for a "cleaner" higher contrast version, while Manga Player/Pika (like most French editions) preserves more of the gray scales at the cost of an occasionally "dirtier" appearance. The French edition is also flipped but reasonably well retouched.
[In fact, in some cases the French do a better job than the Americans: as an example, in chapter 39 ("Confession"), Studio Proteus obviously missed that Skuld was writing partial differential equations and flipped them; Manga Player caught it and rearranged the panels instead. (So you see, all those surveys indicating how much worse Americans are in math than the rest of the world obviously have a point.) The Manga Player/Pika translation is not nearly as loose as the Studio Proteus one; I'll leave it to you to judge whether this is good or bad.

[OK, so it's silly, derivative (of Ah, My Goddess), and Akamatsu has nowhere reached the skill level he shows in Love Hina. And anyone who has ever worked with computers will cringe at the "technical" talk here. But still, um, it's relatively short?
[It should be noted that as the series goes on, it becomes less a "dream girlfriend/wish fulfillment" one and more of a "wacky invention/madcap adventure" one. [If you haven't seen the colorized Akira (the Marvel version is hard to find nowadays), my personal verdict is that while they obviously tried hard to do a reasonable job on it, in the end it doesn't really work. The problem is the interaction between the shading in the original and the added color often makes for a murky result. It's like the problem with colorized black-and-white movies, only more severe. And with the black and white version of the manga now complete, in a large, but inexpensive format, there's really no reason to get the color one.]

Alice is a dreamy girl but terribly reserved, who has the greatest difficulty in expressing her feelings. Secretly in love with a boy whom she sees in her archery course, she witnesses with sadness the love declaration of her older sister for the same guy, and turns away trying to forget her passion. Like Lewis Carroll's heroine, she will cross paths with a strange white rabbit who will cause her to tumble into the fantastic: this latter has gotten lost right in the middle of a busy street, and Alice doesn't hesitate a second in flying to his aid, at the risk of being struck herself. She will learn later, from the mouth of the rabbit who takes on human form, that she is a Master of Lotis, capable of controlling the magic power of certain sacred words. And the first among these, courage, has just opened the doors to a fantastic world...
[Watase's latest series, with the French version tracking pretty closely behind the original. I've just started this one, and it seems pretty good, but then all of Watase's series I've seen seem to start out strong, no matter how they finish. Warning: it's more "straight shoujo" in feel than, say, Fushigi Yugi, at least to my eyes. A decent edition from Glénat, unflipped, with good paper and print quality. Sound effects are replaced, still, but so far they've been reasonably restrained in doing so.

There's even a story to it, really! (at least, at the start :)
[Take Kimagure Orange Road, double the etchiness, halve the ESP, replace Hikaru by about 50 other girls, and what do you get? Well, maybe not Angel exactly, but close enough. Kosuke isn't as wishy-washy as Kyosuke, but on the other hand, Shizuka isn't quite as multifaceted as Madoka. (She's about as tough, though.)
[There's also a bit of the "childhood friends/future promise" storyline as well; Shizuka and Kosuke first meet as briefly as 5-year-olds, where he impresses her with his (apparent) courage and gentility. However, when they meet again years later in, uh, "university," as the French translation most of the time puts it, the main impression he gives is that of a total perv. Can she bring forth the good side of him again? Oh, and there's also a bit of a Ranma parody as well, when kooky-but-powerful Chinese girl Lin-Lin shows up as a potential Shizuka rival, à la Shampoo and Akane.
[The stories vary from the silly-but-fun to the silly-and-dumb, with the first and last volumes being a bit different. The first is all Shizuka-as-tough-girl and Kosuke-as-frequently-beaten-wimp, but U-Jin evidently found this a bit tiresome, and later volumes have them as a more or less evenly matched pair of pervert detectives - that is, they investigate the rather perverted problems which seem to afflict their friends and acquaintances (mostly girls, of course). Shizuka applies her beauty and strength to the issues while Kosuke uses his own (perverted) cleverness and, um, stamina. The last volume shifts gears again and wraps up the series as pretty much straight romantic comedy, with only a moderate amount of H content. One positive point of the whole series is that the main characters don't seem to go around denying their feelings for each other. Shizuka does deny something else, of course, until the very end!
[By the way, this was the series that started the round of manga censorship in France back in 1996. It's pretty hard to find nowadays; Tonkam doesn't even admit to having published it on their web site. Since the French government banned the series from public display, Tonkam has given up any thought of ever reissuing it. You'll have to find used copies somewhere if you want it; it took me years to assemble a set myself.
[On the off-chance that you do manage to find it, the French edition is unflipped and complete, including the random-dot stereograms from the later (Japanese) edition. (These are however quite crude, in more ways than one.) In terms of quality, well, this is one of the first manga editions Tonkam did; the translation is a bit iffy at first, but improves as it goes along. And I don't mean to be blaming the victim, but Tonkam was just asking for trouble with the covers they put on these (based on U-Jin's artwork, but much cruder than the original covers).
[Oddly enough, the easiest volumes to find (perhaps because they were harder to sell originally) are the last two, published after the censorship decree. They have appended to them a collection of supportive essays from a number of noted French intellectuals and are stamped with the puckish notation that they are "dangerous for occidental adults."
[Of course, we really shouldn't single out the "occidental" adults, since the "oriental" ones were once in the same boat - the original Angel series was withdrawn from publication for a while in the early '90s during a similar hysteria. After this subsided, the series was reissued with more volumes and more material (including the stereograms mentioned above) added. That's why this is often called Shin Angel as well. Incidentally, U-Jin's own take on all the hysteria can be found in volume 5 of the manga. In retrospect, all this seems quite odd for a manga whose H content for the most part is fairly mild by contemporary standards.
[Difficulty: more dialogue and parenthetical remarks than your run-of-the-mill H manga make this one moderate in difficulty.]

[Aoi Nanase is mostly an illustrator and character designer, which kind of shows. Not that the story here is bad or anything - quite the contrary; though nothing complex, it's readable enough. But the real appeal of this manga is the beautiful artwork. Fortunately, the Tonkam edition maintains this well enough, with a good reproduction that preserves all the color illustrations at the beginning.]

Ce coeur volé appartenait à Kaori Makimura, la défunte assistante de Ryo Saeba alias City Hunter morte dans un accident lorsqu'elle tenta de sauver un garçon qui faillit se faire écraser par une voiture. Un an après que le coeur fut transplanté, une voix appelle Glass Heart pour qu'elle se réveille et qu'elle aille rejoindre celui qu'elle aime Ryo Saeba. Ne voulant plus tuer, Glass Heart sera néanmoins obliger de se réveiller de retrouver celui qui hante ses rêves, elle apprendra aussi au fûr et à mesure grâce à l'influence de Kaori qui communique avec elle à apprendre à s'aimer et à ne plus tuer. Glass Heart is the code name of a professional killer. She is known for the perfection of her work and for her blind obedience to the organization to which she belongs. But, after her fiftieth murder, she sees the daughter of the man that she assassinated bringing a couple of ice cream cones. At that instant, her "glass heart" broke and she decided to throw herself from the top of a building so that she could at last find freedom in death. Unfortunately, the members of her organization did not want to abandon their most prized asset and had a new heart transplanted into Glass Heart, because hers had been pierced by the fence at the base of the building she jumped from. While I like Angel Heart well enough, and Hojo is certainly at the height of his artistic powers, I can't help but feel that story-wise, he's back where he was in the early days of City Hunter, still trying to feel out what tone he should take - how serious, how comic, how sentimental.... Even he notes this, saying in volume 7 that he is finally starting to get the manga going along the pathway he had intended. And, incidentally, he foresees it going another ten years as well....
[Difficulty: like all of Hojo's works, it is fairly dialogue- intensive by usual manga standards, so I'll have to call it moderate in difficulty. Though again, like all of his works, the storytelling is straightforward and easy-to-follow, so it's definitely approachable if you have even a modicum of French reading ability.]

The intrigue is without doubt one of the most convoluted among currently available shoujo manga. Actually, it's not so much a shoujo as an attractive representative of a style one might call "tenchi-ai" (love among angels), since most of the protagonists change their sex at least once during the course of the story. Je trouve qu'Angel Sanctuary est vraiment un manga super. Les dessins de Kaori Yuki sont fantastiques et même si le sénario est très compliqué et que les bulles se chevauchent (parfois au point d'avoir à relire des passages pour comprendre) on voit qu'il y a plus à cette histoire qu'une simple histoire d'inceste ou même qu'un simple sénario de guerre angelico-démoniaque. Chaque personnage est détaillé au maximum, l'histoire est entrecoupée d'intrigues parrallèles super-interressantes; même à propos de personnages qui sembleraient secondaires. J'ai seulement été déçue par la fin; mais après quatre ans et dix-huit volumes (les deux derniers sont vraiment moins bien), il ne faut pas s'attendre à ce que subsiste la fraicheur d'origine. Bref, un bon manga, pour les lecteurs qui n'ont pas peur de prendre leur temps et de se donner à fond dans cette histoire assez complexe. (Sleepy Angel)

Name: The Apprentice Mangaka
Synopsis : Il n'y a pas d'histoire à proprement parlé dans l'Apprenti Mangaka, puisqu'il s'agit plutôt d'un 'guide' pour les mangakas débutants. La première partie consiste en une série de leçon[s] de maître Toriyama lui-même sur ce qu'il faut faire et ce qu'il ne faut pas faire quand on dessine un manga. La deuxième partie consiste en une série de conseils plus tec[h]niques et moins drôle de la main d'Akira Sakuma. Enfin, la troisième et dernière partie est formée de commentaires de Tori sur des planches envoyées par des amateurs à un concours du Shônen Jump. Toriyama et Sakuma ont réalisé ce recueil uniquement pour ce concours.
There isn't a plot to speak of in l'Apprenti Mangaka, since it is really more of a "guide" for would-be mangakas. The first part consists of a series of lessons from Toriyama-sensei himself on what to do and what not to do when drawing a manga. The second part consists of a series of pointers both more technical and less amusing from the hand of Akira Sakuma. Then, the third and final part is made up of commentaries by Tori on the pages sent in by amateurs for a contest sponsored by Shounen Jump. Toriyama and Sakuma created this collection because of this contest.
Commentaires : Distrayant et drôle dans sa première partie (où l'on retrouve Tori qui s'auto-parodie et qui 'explique' le dessin avec les personnages de Dr Slump), le reste du volume est néanmoins destiné principalement à ceux qui se sentent la fibre artistique et qui veulent se lancer dans le manga amateur. Diverting and amusing in the first part (where one encounters again Tori's self-parodying self, and which "expounds" on drawing using the characters of Dr. Slump), the rest of the volume is nevertheless destined principally to those who feel the artistic spark within and wish to launch themselves into amateur manga. [Clearly, Glénat has decided to publish anything and everything with Toriyama's name on it. That's not to say this isn't of interest, though. It is a "how-to" book on manga by someone who really is a manga artist - and one of the most successful ever, at that. He only gives the most rudimentary information on artistic techniques, but does have useful things to say on story structure and pacing, and on effective presentation and layout. The most interesting part from my viewpoint is the last section, where Toriyama gives rather brutally frank assessments of sample manga pages sent in by readers. He's a little rough on the kids (many are only 11 or 12), but is remarkably good at improving their crude efforts with a few deft touches.
[Needless to say, this is strongly geared toward the Shounen Jump crowd. If Takeuchi or Watase is your idol, you're probably going to have some disagreements. Also, despite Glénat's cover, this work predates Dragon Ball, so there's no info on how to get fights to stretch out over 200 pages (heh, heh).

After love, guys' sweat smells like honey: A young O.L. lives with her cousin, a rather placid high school student. When the latter is asked if she has a boyfriend, she replies "I don't need one," "that sort of thing doesn't interest me." However, the former doesn't really seem to agree and thinks a love relationship with a guy isn't so bad. Despite this, the words of her cousin ring in her head like the buzzing of an insect after the latter shows up. Faced with this attitude of repulsion, even to the masculine odor, from her cousin, the young woman calls into question her love relationship and becomes aware of masculine lies and egocentrism.

Asatte Dance relates the complicated story of Suekichi, a young Japanese student, who has inherited a fortune from his great grandfather, despite the fact he only met the old man two or three times as a child. To receive his inheritance, he must abide by certain conditions (spelled out in the first volume). A charming young woman, Aya puts her hooks into him. [Or rather, he puts something else into her... um, sorry about that.] She has just separated from her husband. But Suekichi's lawyer suspects Aya is aware of the existence of the inheritance. [That should say "... suspects Aya is after the inheritance." She certainly knows about it, since she's there (uninvited) when the will is read!] Suekichi works with a small theater troupe, for which he does the books and plays small roles. The lawyer makes a deal with Aya's husband and engages the services of Miyuki to kill two birds with one stone: Suekichi, seduced by Miyuki, will leave Aya, who will then return to her husband. (FJ)

Asatte Dance isn't a manga to put into everyone's hands. It's a clever production by Naoki Yamamoto, who is one of the most prolific artists of pornographic manga in Japan. He includes numerous sulfurous scenes, which yet follow along normally in the course of his story. It is very well done and never vulgar. A very good manga for those who are tired of comics for kids! The pluses: The drawing style fits the story. It is passionate. All the kind of thing you'll never see in Beverly! [Hmm, I have an uneasy feeling this is referring to Beverly Hills 90210, which was popular in France at the time...] The minuses: The lettering in the French version is a little too stiff. [I don't have much to add to the assessment here other than to say that, unlike some others, I actually liked the ending to this series! Incidentally, it was apparently the success of the French version which led to Viz picking this one up (and Tekkon Kincrete as well). The French edition is a bit pricey, as these things go (70FF for the first couple, 55FF for the later ones), but is fairly well done. It is flipped.

[Interesting that the only examples of comic strips given in the blurb are American ones. Such things do exist in France as well, though nowhere near to the same extent as the US - the whole newspaper comics section thing doesn't seem to exist in France, so far as I have seen; papers have at most a couple of one-panel gag comics stuck randomly here or there.
[As for Azumanga, it's one of my absolute favorites. But as my little excerpt (http:jeu.9.html) indicates, you may need to adjust your way of thinking a bit before diving into it.]
