Commentaire : Je trouve que ce manga fait bien rigoler. A noter que certains dessins, plus particulièrement les mains et les pieds des garçons sont dessinés plutôt bizarrement. Cela choque un peu mais bon ça passe. Les idées de l'auteur concernant les fringues sont assez impressionantes, beaucoup de variétés. Néanmoins, je trouve que l'histoire, vers la fin, manque un peu de piquant. (ioune)
I find this manga to be a lot of fun. I should note that some of the artwork, particularly the hands and feet of the guys, is really bizarrely done. It's a tad surprising but, fine, it passes. The ideas of the author concerning clothing are impressive, a lot of variety. Nevertheless, I do find that the story, toward the end, lacks a bit of a point. (ioune)

"Gals!" is the latest manga from Fujii Mihona. This story features the Shibuya Kogals culture, one of the subcultures in Japan. Kogals are the girls wearing crazy and colorful clothes, high shoes and often characteristic make-up - white paint around their eyes and lips, sometimes quite a lot. The main characters of this story are Ran Kotobuki and her friends Miyu and Aya. Ran is attending high school and normally she's a happy girl, but she always has one problem - money. Because she wants to be always on the top with fashion, she needs money to buy clothes, and they aren't cheap. She's very proud of herself, so she will not lower herself to stealing, she tries to find a way to get some money. Her parents and brother are police officers, and they expect her to stay in the family job, but for now she wants to be happy with her life and to be a kogal.
Overall "Gals!" is not only a manga which tells about friendship and fashion, but it also shows us one of the subcultures in Japan. What's important is that it's shown from a good side, unlikely [sic] like in other mangas. That's what makes it even more interesting to read.
[Despite the blurbs above, don't expect any sort of profound sociological insight into the "world of the kogals" out of this manga. Instead, what we actually have here is a shoujo version of a furyo (punk) manga! When the first page shows Ran smacking some guy into the stratosphere, and the first chapter is entitled "Kogals are invincible!" you get some idea of how things are going to go. If you're in the mood for such a thing, it's pretty entertaining. If not, well, it can be pretty fatiguing.
[Rather than the visual assault of, say, Eikichi Onizuka's piles of garbage and multiple contusions and abrasions, you get the visual assault of Ran Kotobuki's bizarre leopard prints, 12-inch platform shoes and five-foot-wide eyes. In other words, as far as visual assaults go, "Gals!" is one of the cuter ones.
[Like Onizuka, Ran does spend time solving (or at least meddling in) the problems of her friends and enemies along the way, and so often ends up converting the latter into the former. Unlike GTO, though, the chapters are mostly episodic, with only slight connection between them. I should add, though, that in a slight contradiction to the French blurb above, there are a few romantic complications thrown in, especially in later volumes.
[One touch I liked were the absurd "public service announcements" that Fujii-san scatters through the text, about how to resolve school problems without violence and so forth, all concepts which seemed to have escaped her protagonists. Oddly enough, these were done by her brother - and her mother was her only "assistant," doing the screentones (and arguing with her constantly about the manga). Dunno quite what to make of this familial production. Fujii-san's art style does vary a lot as the manga goes on, as she herself notes, but it's always hyper-cluttered and hyper-cute.
[If you're having trouble determining whether this is a positive or negative review, then you're reading this correctly. For the right audience, this one's a riot; for others, it could be anathema. I'm on the riot side of the fence - in fact, I'll admit this is one of my top favorites now - but then I always was an unruly child.
[I did a little bit of comparision of volume 2 from among the Glénat edition, an English fan translation, and the Japanese original. Glénat actually comes off pretty well, with rather fewer notable translation flubs. (I only recall one, which was probably an editing error.) The slang Glénat used to represent "kogal-speak" did seem a little artificial to me (lots of Verlan, for instance), but I guess in some sense this is a reasonable imitation of the original.
[Difficulty: moderate. The slang level is elevated, of course, but nowhere near that of something like GTO.]

[OK, let's admit upfront the premise for the story is ludicrous. A marionette maker in late 16th-century Japan, who uses his extraordinary skills to unravel unsolved murders and right unrequited wrongs, and who is accompanied by a pretty, hot-tempered (and flat-chested) princess-samurai - well, "reality" is clearly not going to have a lot to do here. But Takada is obviously having a lot of fun, and it's infectious - sort of like with Detective Conan, though the series are otherwise of course quite different. A word of warning though - Takada's notion of "fun" is still going to have its share of blood, gore, and body parts. Hmm, not that that's so unusual any more...

In a future not all that far away, a small group, halfway between the police and the paramilitary, battles against information terrorism. Everything begins as a sort of complicated chess game between Major Motoko Kusanagi and a precocious hacker nicknamed "The Puppeteer." For in this future, many people have been "augmented," possessing scarcely anything human except their brain in a cyborg body (like the Major), and the distinction between the CyberNet and the real world is not very clear.
Commentaires : Je n'ai pas lu toute la VF, mais c'est une copie conforme de la VA, donc identique à la VO à trois pages censurées près. Le texte est clair, ce qui n'est pas si simple pour des explications techniques a la Shirow. IMHO, son oeuvre la plus aboutie jusqu'ici. Le cyberpunk tel qu'il devrait être, réaliste, avec les implications des débouches techniques pousses jusqu'au bout. Avec la magie de Shirow pour mélanger action style commando et exactitude scientifique, tension et humour. Vous ne l'avez pas encore lu? Précipitez-vous! (ME).
I haven't read all the French version, but it's a copy conforming to the English version, and hence is identical to the original except for the three censored pages. The text is clear; what's not so simple are Shirow's technical explanations. IMHO, this is his most successful work. Cyberpunk the way it ought to be, realistic, with the implications of technical advances pushed to their limit. With Shirow's magic touch for mixing commando-style action and scientific exactitude, tension and humor. You haven't read it yet? Get with the program! (ME)
[As mentioned, this version is made from the plates (or whatever the heck they use these days) for the American version (though the translation of the dialog is directly from the Japanese), so there's not much reason for an English-speaking person to get this one.
[By the way, the notorious three missing pages (which really aren't that bad) were translated separately into French, and copies are drifting around the net. Which is most appropriate, come to think of it...

Publié dans "Young Magazine" dès 1991, Ghost in the Shell est sans doute l'oeuvre la plus aboutie de Shirow. Le manga a fait l'objet d'une adaptation en film d'animation par le maître Mamoru Oshii en 1995, film salué par la critique comme une nouvelle référence dans le genre. Ghost in the Shell pose des questions essentielles sur la nature du vivant et la valeur de la virtualité, jusqu'à inspirer des oeuvres comme "Matrix". En France, les nombreux fans de cette série attendaient en trépignant d'impatience la parution du troisième volume; c'est maintenant chose faite.
Published in "Young Magazine" since 1991, Ghost in the Shell is without doubt the most successful of Shirow's works. The manga was the subject of an anime movie adaptation by the master Mamoru Oshii in 1995, a film saluted by the critics as a new reference of the genre. Ghost in the Shell poses essential question on the nature of life and the value of the virtual, inspiring works like "The Matrix." In France the many fans of this series have waited impatiently for the appearance of the third volume; it's finally here.

[All right, I admit it, I was wrong. I called "Min Min Mint" the silliest manga ever to appear in French translation, but "Girls Saurus" makes it look like Henry James in comparison. (I mean from the seriousness standpoint; Mint is still a lot cuter than Henry James ever was.) This one is so dumb you can actually feel the IQ points leaking out of your head as you read it. Which is just as well, as then you'll be in a proper mental condition to appreciate it.
[Nominally a "fighting" manga, but there's not much boxing, just insanity and inanity. After being beaten to a pulp by a mysterious (fat and ugly) girl, Shingo develops a sort of gynophobia, thinking of girls as violent dinosaurs. Despite, or perhaps because of, this fear, girls start to throw themselves left and right at Shingo. Well, except for the mysterious (but now slender and beautiful, due to an intense training regime) Haruka, who tends to throw lefts and rights at him instead. Will he be able to survive the collisions? Don't count on it.
[Let me not give the wrong impression, though. Despite any implied criticism above, this manga is so brazen about what it does that I can't help but admire it. One suspects that Ms. Kusunoki (the mangaka) has some sort of "tame the boys through repeated humiliation" agenda going on here. To which I say, "Please, ma'am! Discipline me again!" Heh, heh.
[The Muteki edition is pretty good, though they've had inordinate problems in getting it out. They switched printers between the first and second volumes, which caused a several month delay. Muteki's apparent demise has now put the third volume on indefinite hold.
[This short series is followed by a sequel, Girls Saurus DX. The reason for the name change was that Girls Saurus moved from Shounen Sunday to a more "adult" (that is, seinen) publication, Sunday GX. No doubt this will result in a substantial increase in its intellectual content.

Commentaire : Je voyais plusieurs de mes amies lire des mangas. Elles m'ont donnée envie et je me suis également lancée dans la lecture de ces bandes-dessinées. Tellement de séries sont proposées que je ne savais pas par laquelle commencer. La couverture de Global Garden m'a beaucoup attirée. Je crois que j'ai fais le bon choix: c'est une histoire tendre, pleine d'émotions... De plus il n'y a pas de violence et ça je trouve ça remarquable! (ananas)

Si, comme dans Magie Intérieure, le merveilleux reste le fil conducteur de l'histoire, l'auteur renoue avec les thèmes écologiques de ses premières oeuvres (Please Save My Earth). Le "Global Garden" auquel aspire Einstein est une vision à la fois écologique et humaniste de l'avenir de la planète, un rêve de symbiose entre la nature et les hommes, guidés par une jeune femme au regard doux. Mais cet avenir demande de savoir écouter son coeur et ses désirs. Ruika, noyée dans un futur par procuration, risque de se perdre, de devenir un garçon. Qu'adviendra-t-il alors du voeu d'Einstein?
Cependant, depuis une vingtaine d'années, on observe l'accroissement de la surface végétalisée de notre planète; "Global Garden" prend alors une autre dimension! Avec un trait d'une finesse rare, Hiwatari nous entraîne dans les tourments des âmes qui cherchent juste à aider ceux qu'elles aiment, parfois même au péril de leur intégrité. La violence des émotions brouille tout et Hikaru, face à Ruika, réagit avec la force de ses émotions brutes, sans aucune diplomatie. Il semble même oublier son objectif. One girl in particular, Mariko Nakasu, a.k.a. "Nice Body-ko," gets way too close for Mikako's comfort. But why is she getting so upset? And, more importantly, what (crazy) things will she decide to do about it?
[A fun read, filled with Yazawa's trademark quirky-yet-complex characters. This is one of her earlier works, and the artwork is perhaps a bit simpler/cruder than her later efforts, but all in all I recommend it.
[The Akata/Delcourt edition seems pretty good. They tend to retain the kun/chan/etc. honorifics; before the "anti-otaku" crowd gets up in arms, there's a specific plot point which more or less requires them to do this.
[One interesting/peculiar feature of this manga is that the covers fit together to make one big picture featuring all the main characters.
[Difficulty: I'd call it moderate. The slang level isn't too high, but there's lots of chatting back and forth, side remarks, etc., that require a bit of work to follow.]

[If you've seen the anime, you know what to expect, right? And if you haven't yet seen the anime, it probably means you're not really interested. But anyway...
[Kintaro Oe ("golden boy" Oe) has learned all there is to learn in school, and now is out to learn in the "school of life" through a succession of short-term jobs. Somehow pretty girls and mild perversion always seem to get involved. It's fun stuff, albeit a tad misogynistic at times.
[The story direction changes a bit starting in the latter half of volume 2, becoming sort of a meditation on love, passion, and economics, with Kintaro more off to the side. Unfortunately, it declines precipitously in quality as it goes on; I found even the end of volume 3 a bit disappointing. Volume 4 returns things to a moderately good level, but the latter half of volume 5 unfortunately ruins a promising (re)start. Ah, well, I'm sure I will continue with this one out of force of habit, but it's only a shadow of what it could have been.
[The Dynamic edition is flipped, but fairly cleanly done. Kintaro's notebook entries are basically all there and legible. (They did skimp a couple of times, but were far more diligent than I think I would have been!)
[Warning: the publication schedule for this manga was the most leisurely I have ever seen, with intervals between volumes of up to two(!) years. Current mumblings from Dybex indicate the French edition will likely never continue past volume 5. So you'll need to search out the original or something like the Italian edition to read the sequel.
[Difficulty: plenty of slang, scribbled little notes, and the sheer variety of areas Kintaro gets into make this one a little harder. Let's call it moderately difficult (even if Kintaro is moderate in nothing else!)]

However, after an unsuccessful adventure, he has a revelation: he will become a teacher. What better way to have pretty girls in front of his eyes all day long.

At first, this one didn't grab me because I found the artwork ugly, but I read it again and fell under its charm. The manga is very funny; you can't help but devour the pages to find out how Onizuka is going to get out of the problems created by his students. The girls are well drawn... [If you like loose socks, at any rate.] This manga is realistic [uhhh...] and funny; you find here the universe of school and delinquents... Recommended (Pikouze)
[Eikichi Onizuka was a delinquent and dropout, but decides to become a high school teacher, mostly to meet girls. Despite himself, he somehow manages to become a "great teacher," solving his students' problems with the most unconventional of means.
[I'm not sure whether I'd liken it to Rookies; the comparison I like better is with Golden Boy. Onizuka and Oe both have somewhat foolish, perverted exteriors which hide their hidden abilities. GTO is a bit more realistic than Golden Boy (or put another way, it is slightly less preposterous), but I found Eikichi (at the start) a less likeable character than Kintaro. However, my opinions have changed as the two series have progressed; by volume 3, GTO is much better than Golden Boy. Fujisawa seems to handle the continuing story well, coming up with all sorts of creative new twists, while Egawa just gets bogged down.
[Difficulty: The Pika edition is unflipped and is (for the first couple of volumes) done with care. However, the first chapter starts off with a dense mix of French and Japanese slang, filled with contractions galore. It moderates somewhat as the volume goes on, but it still has to rank as one of the harder ones to get started reading.
[Unfortunately, the quality of the editing dropped off markedly in the middle of the run, so there were an increasing number of (unintended) spelling flubs, grammatical mistakes, and so on, which both irritates and (for a non-native speaker) increases the difficulty in puzzling things out. This seems to have improved again for the last batch of volumes, though. In any case, after you've gotten through a dozen of these, you should be pretty much home free, right?]

A fabulous story in nine volumes, magnificently drawn. The atmosphere is dark as can be. Here no one is truly good or evil, everyone simply is struggling to survive. Strongly recommended (S'M'G)
[I heard this French edition was originally made from the English one. That doesn't seem quite right to me, since the French version was complete before the English one. But, who knows? (Well, somebody does, but it's not me.) The reedition is apparently supposed to have better production quality, though I haven't actually compared the two.]

Commentaire : Gunnm est un des mangas les plus appréciés, et il mérite ce succès. D'abord, Gally est une héroîne formidable et pleine de psychologie. Ensuite,le monde de Kishiro est extrêmement violent et chaotique, ce qui n'empêche pas le lecteur d'y trouver sa place. (Jordan)

Commentaire : Cette suite du célébre "Gunnm" de Yukito Kishiro mérite que l'on si penche quelque peu. En effet, même si cet nouvel opus parait 7 ans après le dernier (tome 9) des "gunnm" il n'en perd pas moins sa pêche et sa fraicheur. Ce dernier nous transpose directement après que Gally fût exploser par le docteur Desty Nova (cf. gunnm tome 9) et relate sont parcour sur zalem et bien sûr son histoire. On voit donc de nouveaux personnages apparaître toujours aussi charismatiques, le style graphique nous prouve encore une fois que monsieur Kishiro est un maître de l'art manga à l'encre de chine. Pour terminer, fan de "gunnm" courrais acquérir cette nouvelle série les sensations perçues dans les premiers tomes seront vite retrouvées ainsi que l'extase de mirer de belles planches de dessin, et pour les autres je ne saurais vous conseiller de vous procurer la série "gunnm" et de courir acheter ceux là. Ce final, en réalité prématuré, ne correspondait pas vraiment aux aspirations de Yukito Kishiro, qui prévoyait de poursuivre les aventures de Gally bien au delà de Zalem! Aujourd'hui, 7 ans après la "fin" de la saga, Kishiro réalise enfin son rêve et décide, ni plus ni moins, de reprendre sa série au moment de l'arrivée de Gally sur Zalem!
This ending, prematurely realized, didn't really correspond to what Yukito Kishiro desired; he envisioned the pursuit of Gally's adventures well beyond Zalem! Today, 7 years after the "end" of the saga, Kishiro has finally realized his dream and has decided, no more no less, to take up his series again at the point of Gally's arrival on Zalem!
Qui était Yoko? D'où venait-elle? Comment notre héroïne a-t-elle perdu son corps et assimilé son incroyable technique de combat? Qui étaient ses adversaires d'antan, et que sont-ils devenus? Kishiro nous révélera son passé martien, et son destin... au-delà des étoiles. Gally revient plus en forme que jamais, pour notre plus grand plaisir!
Who was Yoko? Where did she come from? How did our heroine lose her body and learn her incredible combat technique? Who were her adversaries in the past, and what happened to them? [In case you didn't know, Kishiro apparently became gravely ill at one point, and "finished" off Gunnm in a rush. He has since recovered, and has gone back to redo the ending, beginning in the present volume. Also, as the blurb indicates, the French version preserves the names from the Japanese version; e.g., Gally is the "Alita" of the American version.]
